100th Anniversary of the first RAF Airmail Service

A regular British Air Mail service was first proposed in July 1917. Six months later the scheme was put forward again when the French Authorities suggested to the British Air Minister that they should jointly explore the possibility of a service between London and Paris. Nothing came of this until 17th November 1918 when a basis of agreement was reached between the RAF and the Army Postal Service. The inaugural flight for an international airmail service between England, France and Germany was arranged for 16th December 1918 but met with bad weather which limited operations. The arrangements were modified before the regular service began on 1st March 1919; 110 and 120 Squadrons operated the air mail service from Folkestone (Hawkinge) to Cologne to the Army of Occupational Forces, to provide troops with a fast mail service. This carried 90 tons of mail on 1,842 flights but ceased on 31st August after maintaining a healthy 96% service reliability.
