On th 4 December 2018, the large 1st Recorded Signed For stamp and both Special Delivery stamps were the latest stamps to switch printers from De La Rue to International Security Printers Walsall. We commemorate this change with our Windsor definitive cover, featuring all 3 stamps and Windsor postmark dated on the date of the changeover.
Arnold Machin RA, the sculptor, designed the portrait of the Queen which has appeard on postage stamps since 1967 and has become probaby the most reproduced portrait of all time. He also designed the image of the Queen's head for the first decimal coins. The Royal Mail has lost count of the number of 'Machins' circulated since they first appeared in pre decimal Britain. A conservative estimate would be 60 billion, and production is still in full spate.
Both stamps and coinage bear the hallmark of Machin's best work, depicting a young but regal Queen, whith clear lines and great subtlety of shading. Regional stamps with emblematic designs have been issued for Scotland, Ireland and Wales since 1958 but the very first one for England was not issued until the 23rd April, St Georges Day, 2001.
