Charles and Camilla
When Prince Charles first announced that he was to marry his long time mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles, it threw the establishment into a panic. It was thought that the heir to the throne could not marry a divorcee and the precedent of Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson was cited. The first intention was to have a civil ceremony conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in St Georges Chapel, Windso, but that was declared impossible. Those who filed objections cited the Marriage Act 1949, argoing that it's provisions do not allow royals to marry in a civil ceremony. In early March the registrar general for England Len Cook, cleared the way for the pair to wed. He pointed to the 1998 Human Rights Act, which he said overrides earlier laws that exclude royals from civil marriage ceremonies. The human rights legislation ensures all citizens are treated equallly by the law so he dismissed the 11 legal objections to the civil marriage.
