50th Anniversary of Regional Stamps
The first regional stamps were issued on 18th August 1958, bowing to pressure from the regions, particularly from the Channel Isles, to have their own stamps, different from the British definitives. There were 3d stamps for the six regions - Jersey, Guernseey, Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. These were followed up by high values, 6d and 1/3d for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Regional definitives continued untl 1969 when the Channel Isles Post Ofices went independent, provoking a huge collecting interest at the time, followed by the Isle of Man in 1973. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland stamps continued until 1999 when the regionals were rebranded Country Definitives and redesigned with larger emblems and smaller Queen's head.
