Dad's Army is a BBC television sitcom about the antics of a British Home Guard unit during the Second World War in the fictional seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea. It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft and broadcast on the BBC from 1968 to 1977. The sitcom ran for nine series and 80 episodes in total, and there was also a radio version based on the television scripts as well as a feature film.

Royal Mail is marking the 50th anniversary of this enduring and hugely popular sitcom with a set of eight Special Stamps. Our lovely cover features all 8 new Dad's Army stamps along with a Thetford postmark (this is where the Dad's Army museum is located), and it is available signed two stars of the show, Frank Williams and Ian Lavender, or signed by Blake Harrison, who played Private Pike in the 2016 Dad's Army film. We are proud to be working in partnership with the Dad's Army Appreciation Society on this cover.

Dad's Army

The Home Guard consisted of local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service, either because of age (hence the nickname “Dad’s Army”) or by being in professions exempt from conscription. Dad’s Army deals almost exclusively with men over military age, and featured British actors, including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Arnold Ridley, John Laurie, Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn, Frank Williams, James Beck and Bill Pertwee.

The Dad’s Army Appreciation Society (DAAS) was set up in 1993 when Bill Pertwee received many requests from fans following the publication of his book ‘Dad’s Army, The Making of a Television Legend’.

The Society is dedicated to keeping the show alive and preserving many video, audio and physical artefacts from the series. It had the full blessing of the writers, Jimmy Perry and David Croft who were most generous in their support.

A regular magazine ‘Permission to Speak, Sir!’ keeps members informed of what’s been going on in and around Walmington-on-Sea.

Each year a member’s meal is arranged at which all the surviving cast have attended over the years. They have always come willingly and been made very welcome, enjoying the relaxed, friendly, family atmosphere at the gatherings.

Links were forged early on with the BBC and pressure was put on them to show episodes not seen for many years and to release the episodes initially on video in the correct order.

The Society also collaborated with the Bressingham Steam Museum to house the Dad’s Army collection which opened in May 2000. The Society also has close links with the Dad’s Army Museum at nearby Thetford.
