Producer: Buckingham Covers
Who will be the first to finish? 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Golden Globe Race and many entrants will be readying their yachts to start the race on June 14th this year. In honour of the 50th anniversary of the first race won by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the entrants will be sailing similar yachts and using similar equipment to the type that would have been used in the first race 50 years ago.
Working with the Golden Globe Race team and with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston we have produced this beautiful cover which features a portrait photograph of Sir Robin and a painting of Suhaii rounding Cape Horn on January 17th 1969, along with a 1st class Union Jack Flag stamp and Falmouth postmark. It is available signed by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, or Susie Goodall.
The Sunday Times Golden Globe Race
To celebrate Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s historic 1968/9 world first solo non-stop circumnavigation in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race, a new Golden Globe Race will be staged to mark the 50th Anniversary of that epic, starting from Falmouth on June 14th 2018. Like the original Sunday Times event, the 2018 Golden Globe Race is very simple. 30 sailors will depart Les Sables-d’Olonne, France on July 1st, 2018 and sail 30,000 miles solo, non-stop around the world, via the five great capes before returning back to Les Sables-d’Olonne. Entrants are limited to sailing similar yachts and equipment to what was available to Sir Robin in that first race. That means sailing without modern technology or benefit of satellite based navigation aids. Competitors must sail in production boats between 32ft and 36ft overall, designed prior to 1988, that have a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge. These yachts are heavily built, strong and sturdy, similar in concept to Sir Robin’s 32ft vessel Suhaili.
