This stamp issue celebrates the beauty of owls both as adults and as owlets, concentrating on species that are comon to the UK. Birds are one of the most collected thematic themes, and Royal Mail have rarely issued stamps featuring owls. Our lovely cover features the se-tenant strip of five 1st class Adult Owl stamps from the set of ten on our Young Little Owl cover.
Barn Owl (Tyto alba) - Heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, They are nocturnal birds and like to eat mice, voles, shrews and some larger mammals and small birds. They are between 33-39cm in length with a wingspan of 80-95cm, weighing 250-350g.
Little Owl (Athene noctua) - Usually seen in daylight, perching on a tree branch, telegraph pole or rock. They are Brown Cream in colour weighing 140-220g, with a wingspan 54-58cm and 21-23cm in length, they eat small mammals, birds beetles and worms.
Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) - Rounded body and head, with dark feathers around its face surrounding the dark eyes. They are the size of a woodpigeon, 37-39cm weighing 330-590g, they are nocturnal and eat small mammals and rodents, small birds, frogs, fish, insects and worms.
Short - eared Owl (Asio flammeus) - Medium sized owl measuring 34-42cm with brown mottled bodies, pale under-wings and yellow eyes. They eat small mammals, especially voles and are usually seen hunting during the day. They weigh 260-350g with a wingspan 90-105cm.
Long - eared Owl (Asio otus) - Medium sized owl, long and thin weighing 210-370g with head feathers which it raises when alarmed, that look like ears. It is buff-brown in colour with darker brown streaks and deep orange eyes. They eat small rodents and small birds in winter.
