Most of the Crown Jewels had been broken up during the time of Cromwell's Commonwealth, so when the nation celebrated the coronation of King Charles II, an entirely new set had to be produced. This lovely set of 4 covers each feature all 8 Crown Jewels stamps along with a different first day of issue postmark.

The Crown Jewels

Following the executin of Charles I in 1649, Oliver Cromwell destroyed all the original Crown Jewels, as they were considered to be redundant. The only item in the present collection to survive the Commonwealth is the golden Ampulla which hold the Holy Oil and the spoon used to anoint the monarch. So the oldest items in the present coronation regalia were made for the coronation of King Charles II.

The Crown Jewels are displayed at the Jewel House in the Tower of London and can be viewed there by the public.
