The original Great Western Railway was built by I K Brunel to a 7’ gauge and ran from Paddington to Bristol and Exeter. Its trains were, at one time, the fastest in the world.

2010 marked the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Railway. Our lovely cover features a single 67 pence GWR King Class stamp from the 2010 Great British Railways issue along with a Didcot postmark.

The Great Western Railway

Eventually the GWR reached the far west of England and South Wales and north to Birmingham, Chester and Birkenhead. Commercial considerations led to the abolition of the broad gauge in 1892 but by 1905 the GWR was on top again developing locomotive designs that were many years ahead of its rivals.

When the railways were nationalised in 1948 the GWR was the only company to have kept its separate existence since being first set up.

Didcot Railway Centre, home of the Great Western Society and its unique collection of Great Western Railway steam engines, coaches, wagons, buildings and small relics is situated in a rural setting around the original engine shed.

The engine shed is home to Great Western steam engines and you can travel on our recreation of Brunel's original broad gauge railway.

On Steamdays and other special events you can see typical activities of a steam age depot, including turning and coaling the locomotives, and ride in 1930’s carriages on two demonstration lines.
