Mount Everest

Mount Everest sits on the border of Tibet and Nepal in the central Himalayas. It towers more than 29,000 feet into the sky. It is the hightest elevation in the world. The Tibetans call it Chomo-Lungma. Mother Goddess of the Land, but in English it is named for the surveyor Sir George Everest. The extreme altitude at the summit affects a climber's physical and mental capabilities. As the body gets only one third of the oxygen available at sea level. It literally takes your breath away. There have been several attempts to scale Everest, but the first to overcome it's deadly challenges were Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal who reached the summit on May 29th 1953.

The news of the conquest of Everest came in on the Coronation Day n 1953 and Edmund Hillary was knighted by the Queen. Those who push the limits of human endurance in their quest to reach the most inaccessible places on the globe need far more than technical mountain climbing and sledding skills. It is the combination of geology, physiology, physics, meteorology, teamwork, motivation, risk taking, commitment and psychological skills that allows explorers to succeed.
