"Celebrating my great grand-mother Elsie Knocker, one of the 'Angels of Pervyse' in the first World War. At a time of recognising the gallantry and sacrfice of those who fought in the first World War one hundred years ago, it's important to remember two very special women who broke convention to take their place on the Front Line to save many lives." - Sally Knocker

Elsie Knocker

(1884 - 1978) was a British nurse and ambulance driver who, together with Mairi Chisholm, saved thousands of soldier's lives on the Western Front during WWI.

Mairi Chisholm

(1896 - 1981) was a Scottish nurse and ambulance driver. Chisholm was also awarded the Order of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and the 1914 Star.

Elsie and Mairi set up their own dressing station 100 yards away from the front lines in Belgium to treat wounded men straight away so that they might have a better chance to make it to hospital. For their bravery throughout the war, they were both awarded the Military Medal and Knight of the Order of Leopold II with palm and the officer of the order of the St. John of Jerusalem award.
