Race Horse Legends
Voted the Number 1 favourite horse by Racing Post readers, Arkle was described as ‘a freak, an unrepeatable lucky shake of genetic cocktail.’ Arkle won 27 of 35 races including the prestigious 1964 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Desert Orchid was voted second favourite in the same poll and the dramatic finale of the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup saw Desert Orchid behind and tiring at the final fence before powering up the notorious climb of the Cheltenham home straight to edge victory at the line, leaving the animated commentator to exclaim, “Simon Sherwood [jockey] punches the air, Dessie has done it!”
