England - Rugby World Champions
England, captained by Martin Johnson, became the World Champions in what is said to have been the best rugby final ever. England always looked the better side, and finished the first half with a lead of 14-5. However, the Australians came back in the second half and great kicking by Elton Flatley brought the scores leve. Wilkinson scored a fourth penalty to bring the score to 17-14 when Flatley again kicked a dramatic last minute penalty to bring the score at full time to 17 all. It was only the second time that a rugby world cup had gone to extra time. Despite the huge pressure, Jonny Wilkinson kept calm and kicked the winning penalty in the dying seconds of the game to secure the trophy for England 20-17.
