70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

On the 22nd June 1940 the French government signed an armistice with Germany leaving Britain facing the threat of German invasion. By the end of June the RAF had built up its strength to 640 fighters and the Luftwaffe had approximately 2,600 fighters and bombers. In order to invade, the Germans needed to control the skies over South East England.

Beginning on the 10th July 1940, the Luftwaffe started attacking shipping convoys in the channel and the channel ports, as well as radar stations in the south. By August 1940 German invasion forces were assembling. Raids against the south coast of England increased in size and number. Their aim was to destroy the RAF either in the air or on the ground in the south and to add to the pressure on defences. They sent both high and low level raids to different targets at the same time. Maintenance and supply situations became critical but the crews kept the fighters as combat ready as possible.
