Celebrating Classic Locomotives of Scotland

Br No's. 62471 & 62496 - The Glens were designed by W P Reid especially for the arduous West Highland line from the Clyde to Fort William and Mallaig. These locomotives reliably steamed freely along the strenuous route through the Glens they were named after their retirement; the last one in 1961. Restored to North British Livery no.256/2469 Glen Douglas represents the class of 32 in the Scottish collection.

BR No.62276 - The class was originally introduced by W Pickersgill in 1899. In 1920 T E Heywood, who succeeded Pickersgill as locomotive superintendent built another eight of the class with improvements, including superheating and a new innovation, for the GNSR; names. No. 49/2277 Gordon Highlander was the last working but, fortunately, was saved for preservation and restored to the original GNSR number and livery.

No.807 Bon Accord - After being built in 1897 by Andrew Barclay of Kilmarnock, No.807 'Bon Accord' went to the Aberdeen Gas Works to haul coal wagons from the harbour to the gas works in Cotton Street. After 17 years extensive repairs allowed 807 'Bon Accord' to continue working until withdrawn in 1964. Saved for preservation and stored at Brechin it later spent time at the Grampian Transport Museum, after which 807 was returned to Aberdeen for full restoration by the Bon Accord Restoration Society. In 2008 fllowing several trials and tribulations, with National Lottery Heitage Fund assistance, 807 passed it's steam tests and can be seen on the Royal Deeside Railway.

BR No.54767/HR No.55 - 'Clan Mackinnon' was a member of a class 8 locomotives introduced by the locomotive superintemdent Christopher Cummings in 1919 with new features to the highlighted railway including Walschearts valve gear, superheating and Belpaire Fireboxes. 'The Clans' as they were known, worked hard the hard highland road successfully. After the grouping of 1923 the LMSR transferred them to the former Caledonian Oban line where they continued to prove their prowess with the last one, No.54767 being withdrawn under British Rail ownership in 1949.
