F W de Klerk is a former State President of South Africa. During his time in office he was instrumental in bringing about the end of apartheid in the country. Although formerly in favour of racial segregation, in 1990 he released a number of political prisoners including Nelson Mandela and later helped to bring in the first universal vote that allowed people of all races in South Africa equal voting rights. At the next general election de Klerk was succeeded as head of state by Nelson Mandela. Mandela became the first black South African president, embodying the positive change in race-relations that the country was beginning to go through. So adored and respected was Mandela that the public came to call him "Tata", meaning father. Mandela and De Klerk were jointly awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize for their role in bringing apartheid to an end.
