Montgomery of Alamein signed 1970 25th Anniversary of VE Day, National Army Museum cover

Bernard Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, served in both World Wars. During WWI he was badly wounded near the Belgian border when a sniper shot him through the lung and knee. Nevertheless, he continued his service and became commander of the Eight Army in North Africa. Montgomery led the Eight Army to the first large-scale allied victory of the war, and eventually forced all Axis forces in North Africa to surrender, resulting in the capture of 275,000 prisoners of war. Later in the war he was placed in charge of all Allied ground forces in Operation Overlord, including the D-Day landings, under general leadership of Dwight D Eisenhower.
