Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday

On 21 April 2016 Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 90th birthday. Recent years have seen many celebrations for Her Majesty - her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the birth of Prince George, the next in the line of succession, in 2013 and becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch in 2015.

In her 64 years on the throne she has reigned through a period of great social and political change. She has always made the Royal Family more accessible to her people. As a young princess she joined the army during World War II and ‘did her bit’ and she has continued to work tirelessly for her country ever since. As such she

is a highly respected and beloved monarch. She has also been responsible for letting the public into her homes with the official openings of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to help meet the costs of running these great historic buildings.

Windsor Castle is an official residence of The Queen and the largest occupied castle in the world. During World War I, the Queen’s grandfather, George V, changed the family surname from the Germanic Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor and our Royal Family as we know it today was created.

In her leisure time Her Majesty is known for her keen interest in horses and also for her love of her pet corgis. This has been a relationship formed from childhood. Queen Elizabeth’s father King George VI first

introduced the breed into the royal circle in 1933 when he bought a corgi called Dookie from a local kennels. The Queen’s current pair of corgis, Willow and Holly are the 14th generation descended from Susan, a dog given to the Princess Elizabeth for her 18th birthday, who even accompanied Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh on their honeymoon.

Historically stamps have been used to mark special royal occasions, also granting younger family members an opportunity for their first official portraits in line with significant milestones.
