The Royal Shakespeare Company
The Royal Shakespeare Company dates back to 1879, when the newly completed Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon staged its first production. After a slow start, and under the direction of William Bridges-Adams, the resident New Shakespeare Company became one of Britains most prestigeous, leading to the theatre receiving a Royal Charter in 1925. In 1959, while director-designate of the Memorial Theatre, Peter Hall, in an attempt to create a unity in direction and acting, announced the creation of a permanent company, leading to the creation of the Royal Shakespeare Society, and the memorial theatre being renamed to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Since its inception, the Royal Shakespeare Company have served as either a launching pad for acting careers, or to further develop those of already prominent actors. Notable members of the Company include Sean Bean, Brian Blessed, Dame Judi Dench, John Gielgud and Ben Kingsley. The RSC now runs four theatres: The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, The Swan Theatre, The Courtyard Theatre and The Other Place.
