King George VI - World War Two signed warrant

World War Two King George VIsigned warrant to 'Governor of Wormwood Scrubs' remitting a six month sentence for David Archibald Hugh Richie under the National Service Act 1941. Countersigned by Home SecretaryHerbert Morrison.

George VI was King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth. George VI reigned from 11^th December 1936 to 6^th February 1952). Known as 'Bertie' to his family and friends, George served in both the Royal Navy and RAF during the First World War, fighting in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 aboard HMS Collingwood. His reign witnessed the devastation of the Second World War & the subsequent collapse of the British Empire and its transformation into the Commonwealth.

Research into who David Archibald Hugh Richie was, has proved difficult and would likely require looking into The National Archives. We believe that hundreds of remittances will have been issued during the war years for those arrested under the National Service Act 1941. Most of these will have been dealt with and signed by secretarial staff on behalf of the King. This warrant is personally signed by the King and countersigned by the Home Secretary which would suggest that this was a particularly high-profile case at the time.
The King did not personally sign every remission—only cases deemed noteworthy, politically sensitive, or requiring special attention would be physically signed by him.These would have been cases where a direct appeal had been made, or where the Home Secretary recommended personal attention. This warrant is rare and potentially one of only a few dozen he would have personally signed during the war.
