John Russell signed 1830 Envelope

John Russell, 1st Earl Russell signed envelope front dated 27th February 1830 and addressed to Brighton. Good overall condition although two corners have been clipped.

Lord Russell is seen by many as the last Whig Prime Minister serving from June 1846 – February 1852 and October 1865 – June 1866. He worked toward emancipation and was involved in the 1832 Reform Bill which expanded the voting franchise. With Russian expansion the ‘Eastern Question’ forced Russell’s resignation after he vowed his support for an independent Turkey and became exasperated by a lack of support from his government.
