Jimmy Doolittle (1896-1993) was an American military general & aviation pioneer who received the Medal of Honor for his bombing raid on Japan in WWII. His early aviation feats included early American coast-to-coast flights, record breaking speed flights and many flying race victories. During the war he planned & led the famous Doolittle Raid in April 1942, the first American air attack on the Japanese archipelago. The raid used Mitchell bombers with reduced armament to increase range, each with a crew of five and no escort fighter aircraft. The daring raid was a major morale booster for the American public following the attack on Pearl Harbour four months previously.
