Hermann Goring (1893-1946) was one of the most powerful figures in the Nazi Party. Upon Hitlers appointed as Chancellor, Goring oversaw the creation of the Gestapo, became commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe, and was tasked with mobilising all sectors of the economy for war which brought many government agencies under his control. As the war continued & the Luftwaffe proved unable to prevent Allied bombing raids, Goring increasingly withdrew from military and political life. He was convicted at the Nuremberg trials in 1946 and sentenced to death, before committing suicide the night before his scheduled execution.
