Edward Smith-Stanley signed 1832 envelope

Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby signed envelope front dated 30th March 1832.

Smith-Stanley was Prime Minister on three separate occasions and is the longest serving leader of the Conservative Party. His first government in 1852 was short lived and labelled the ‘Who Who Ministry’ because of the lack of experienced members. His second government formed in February 1858 and administered the formation of British rule in India, but again lacked a parliamentary majority and fell in June 1859. Stanley’s final governments crowning achievement was the 1867 Second Reform Act which continued the expansion of the voting franchise.
