One of Smeaton's most notable achievements was his work on the construction of the Eddystone Lighthouse. Completed in 1759, the Eddystone Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built on a rocky reef in the open sea and proved to be a significant advancement in maritime safety. Smeaton's innovative design and use of hydraulic lime cement set a new standard for lighthouse construction.

In addition to his work on the Eddystone Lighthouse, Smeaton made significant contributions to various engineering projects throughout Britain. He designed and built several bridges, including the Coldstream Bridge over the River Tweed and the Hexham Bridge over the River Tyne.
