David Lloyd George

David Lloyd George signed typed letter dated 30th June 1933. Written from Surrey to a Mrs Masterman with excellent political content relating to the Liberal Party.

The Prime Minister writes to congratulate Mrs Masterman on the success of her son and then goes on to discuss the last election; ‘I would also like to rejoice with you in the breadth of mind and tolerance displayed by the Women’s Liberal Foundation in actually giving their  assent to the acceptance of a subscription from a Liberal Member of Parliament who stood as a free trader at the last election, and was fought by a protectionist under the national banners around which sir Herbet Samuel and his friend rallied.’

David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor

Lloyd George was the last Liberal Prime Minster, and the only Welshman to hold the office. He served from 1916 to 1922 leading Britain through the turning points of the First World War and was a key statesman in the postwar conferences. Lloyd George administered Ireland’s partition and built on Asquith’s liberal reforms such as raising the school leaving age to 14, expanding the availability of unemployment benefit, and establishing disability allowances.
