Centenary of the Northern Line Railway Extension
Centenary of the London Northern Line's extension from Golders Green to Hendon Central. Buckingham Railway Series collectable with Hendon, London anniversary postmark 19.11.23.
The Northern Line is part of the London Underground, running through North London to South London and is associated with a black colour on the map of the underground. Part of the Northern Line was extended in 1923, from Golders Green through to Hendon Central. This was the first extension of the Northern Line and opened on 19 November 1923.
DID YOU KNOW
The station at Hendon Central is still the same now as it was in 1923 and is now a Grade II listed building.
At the time Hendon Central opened, the area was largely unpopulated. This was created intentionally so that a new suburb would develop around the area and allow the town to be built around the railway. This had happened in the past, with one example being Golders Green station itself.
