Julia discovered botanical art in 1998 when her children were little and she joined an adult education course in the subject. She loved it from day one and has gone on to win numerous awards for her work, both in the UK and abroad, including four RHS gold medals. She now teaches botanical art and has written articles and leaflets on painting botanical watercolours.
When Julia was first contacted about the Royal Mail Post & Go stamp illustrations she was working on a set of larger than life plant paintings – quite a contrast to the British Flora illustrations that ultimately were going to be so small! She relished this challenge and has documented the journey from the early sketches and ideas to the finished sixteen stamps in a book ‘Plant Portraits by Post’.
The Winter Greenery stamps are due to be featured on the BBC Countryfile Christmas Special (21 DEC 2014) and the original paintings of the Spring Blooms set will be on display at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens, from February – August 2015.
