Brigadier General Paul Tibbets DSC DFC

 

Brigadier General Paul Tibbets DSC DFC flew from Polebrook on the first American bombing raid on Europe. After this tour, he went to North Africa. The Top Brass then selected him to lead the Manhattan Project. He chose the crew, got involved in refining the aircraft and on the 6th August 1945, he was Captain of the Enola Gay, the plane which dropped the bomb that ended the war.
