1st Battalion The King's Own Scottish Borderers, 4th November 1951. "United" Hilltop, Korea.
When a large section holding the left flank of the company position had been seriously depleted by casualties and being over-run by the Chinese, on his own initiative he gathered six men and a supply of grenades. He then led at least ten charges towards the enemy, breaking up their attacks and causing heavy casualties until wounded by mortar fragments in the leg. Despite his wounds, he continued to throw in excess of 100 grenades and lead charge after charge, keeping the enemy at bay long enough to allow the withdrawal of his company. Gazette. 28th December 1951.
