Wendy Richard was perhaps best-loved for her long-running starring role in the BBC soap EastEnders. She appeared as matriarch Pauline Fowler from when it first aired until the BBC announced on July 10th 2006 that she would be leaving the series after nearly 22 years. She was also well-known as Miss Brahms in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served throughout the 1970s (and even returned to the part in the 1990s sequel Grace and Favour).
Born in Teeside, Wendy Richard's career has spanned four decades: she starred in other classics such as Dad's Army, Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green and The Likely Lads before starring in her most famous role of all.
She also ventured into the pop world with a Number One hit single "Come Outside" with Mike Sarne. Wendy's film credits included Bless This House, Help (although unfortunately her scene ended up on the cutting room floor), On The Buses, Carry On Girls, Carry On Matron and the film version of Are You Being Served. She received widespread praise for her portrayal of Anne Croft in "Gumshoe" startting Albert Finney.
Wendy was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the Millennium Honours List for her services to television drama.
Wendy passed away on 26 February 2009 after losing a long running battle with breast cancer.
