Lester Piggott is probably the most famous English jockey ever. He was only 12 when he rode his first winner back in 1948. During his career, he won the Derby (England's more prestigious flat race) no less than 9 times - a world record. He was a champion jockey in England 11 times in all. Piggott finally retired at 59 in 1995. He was awarded an OBE in 1975.
He rarely showed emotion and said little, mainly due to his speech impediment. Because of this, he was rather unkindly called "Old Stoneface".
In 1985, Piggott was jailed in 1985 for a year for failing to accurately declare tax on around $4.8 million in earnings. Because of this, he lost his OBE and the previously very high chance of becoming Sir Lester. However, he is Sir Lester to us and we're very grateful that he agreed to sign our Royal Ascot cover!
