Ioan Gruffudd (pronounced Yo-Awn Griffith) was born on October 6th, 1973 in Cardiff and Welsh is his mother tongue.
Ioan started his acting career as a child star in the Welsh soap opera Pobol Y Cwm from 1989 to 1994. At 18, he won a place at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He won a plum role as Jeremy Poldark in a remake of the popular Poldark saga in 1996 after graduation but it was not until 1997 that Ioan really shot to stardom. Simultaneously he played two supporting roles: John Grey in Wilde and Fifth Officer Lowe in the Hollywood blockbuster, Titanic, the only person who went back to rescue survivors from the icy water. Ioan's good looks and talent earned him a legion of fans for both parts.
Then came his title role in Horatio Hornblower which catapulted Ioan to full-fledged stardom. Other leading roles followed including Solomon in the 1998 film Solomon and Gaenor and Pip in the 1999 Masterpiece Theatre rendition of Great Expectations. Ioan joined an ensemble cast as Lt. John Feeley in the 1999 BBC film Warriors. Other projects include Another Life (as Freddie Bywater) and Disney's 102 Dalmations (he plays Kevin). Ioan recently starred Lancelot in the new box office hit, King Arthur.
