Royal Border Bridge, signed by author Andrew Martin
2015 Bridges first day cover featuring the Royal Border Bridge and Berwick Upon Tweed postmark 05.03.2015, signed by author and historian, Andrew Martin.
This magnificent Grade I listed railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1850 spans the River Tweed between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth in Northumberland. It is a Grade I listed railway viaduct built between 1847 and 1850, when it was opened by Queen Victoria. Designed by engineer Robert Stephenson (son of railway pioneer George Stephenson) it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850 and built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and is still in regular use today, as part of the East Coast Main Line.
Despite its name, the bridge does not in fact span the border between England and Scotland, which is approximately three miles further north.

Andrew Martin is a prolific author of novels and non-fiction books. Most of his fiction is in the historical crime genre, and he is perhaps best known for a series of novels set in the early twentieth century and featuring a railway policeman called Jim Stringer.
Martin’s interest in railway history (he is the son of a railwayman) is also reflected in his non-fiction, which includes Underground, Overground: a passenger’s history of the Tube, and Night Trains: the rise and fall of the sleeper.
