1970 SS Great Britain, Falklands FDC, Port Stanley FDI.
On the 23rd June 1970 the SS Great Britain arrived back in Bristol from the Falklands where she had been left since 1886 after being damaged in a gale off Cape Horn. Launched on the 19th July 1843 she created a sensation wherever in the world she visited. After 31 years' service as a steamer her engines were taken out and she carried on as a sailing ship, ending up being used as storage for wool and coal in the Falklands. Since her arrival back in Bristol she has been completely renovated and has pride of place in the city where she was built.
