1934 Mac Robertson Race, Rosco Turner
1934 Mac Robertson London to Melbourne Air Race flown and signed by Rosco Turner who came third in the speed event.
The race took place in October 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The prize money of £15,000 was donated by Macpherson Robertson, an Australian confectionery manufacturer. There were prizes for the fastest journey and for the best performance by any aircraft finishing within 16 days. The race began at dawn on 20th October by which time an initial fi eld of over 60 participants had been whittled down to 20. Over 60,000 watched Jim & Amy Mollison (Amy Johnson) in their Comet Black Magic as they were first off the line. The eventual winners in their DH.88 Grosvenor House were Charles Scott & Tom Campbell Black with a time of less than 3 days. Both second & third places were taken by airliners; the KLM Douglas ‘Uiver’ & Roscoe Turner’s Boeing 247-D.
