1912 1½d Brown, London slogan
15th October 1912 1½d Brown with a London slogan and Chas Nissen & Co address.
Following the printing issues with the Downey Head, which had been issued for the 1911 Coronation, King George V decided his head needed to be replaced with a true profile for future stamp releases. From 1912 a new ‘Oak and Laurel Leaves’ framed design replaced the Downey Head stamps. The profile of the King was based from Mackennal’s coins and medals, with multiple values issued from 1912 to 1913. They are all rare on a first day cover, with the values above the 3d exceptionally scarce.
This good conditioned cover is still sealed, having been produced by renowned stamp dealer Charles Nissen (1880-1944), founder of Chas Nissen & Co. Nissen is a celebrate philatelist whose feats included uncovering the 1872-73 Stock Exchange stamp forgery, writing the definitive book on the plating of the Penny Black, and played a key role in building the Royal Philatelic Collection.
