Biography of Sir Jack Brabham OBE
In 1966, Sir Jack Brabham OBE became the first and only driver in Formula One history to win a world championship in a car bearing is own name. He’d given his first Brabham F1 car its race debut in the 1962 German Grand Prix and it had gone on to make significant progress. But the breakthrough came when he persuaded an Australian manufacturer called Repco to build him a 3-litre engine for F1./p>
The pressure was on. Sir Jack was approaching 40 and some racing commentators were ready to write him off as "over the hill"?. But in 1966, he made them eat their words.
Sir Jack won the 1966 French Grand Prix at Reims in his Repco Brabham BT19, with its Australian designed chassis and 3 litre Formula One engine. His tremendous success was closely followed by more at Brands Hatch, Zandvoort and the extremely testing Nurburgring, one of his most satisfying of victories in 1966. He ended the year as the Formula One World Constructors Champion. What a way to celebrate your 40th Birthday!
‘Black Jack’ made the name Brabham synonymous with motor racing at the highest level. To think Brabham is to think Grand Prix! He is internationally renowned as the winner of 14 Grand Prix; the Formula One World Drivers Champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966; the Formula One World Constructors Champion in 1966 and 1967 and Australian of the Year in 1966.
