Biography of Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath

Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath, was born on 6 May 1932. He had an elder sister and two younger brothers.

He was educated at Ludgrove boarding school and then went onto Eton College in 1945. He later went onto Oxford to study for his degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

In 1946 when his grandfather died, he changed his name to become the 11th Viscount Weymouth and his father became the 6th Marquess of Bath and opened Longleat in 1949 to the public.

In 1976 he changed his family name from Thynne to Thynn, so as to revert to the name's original spelling.

He became the 7th Marquess of Bath in 1992 after the death of his father at the age of 86 and took over the running of Longleat. He took up his seat in the House of Lords and made his maiden speech on the subject of Nursery Education. He left the House of Lords in 1999.

He has made a number of appearances in television programmes, written many books and done a lot of paintings and murals.
