Buckingham First Day Covers

Thank you for supporting the East Hill Lift

Why this is perfect for YOUR collection:

Celebrate the Steepest Working Funicular in England

Buy it Now The East Hill Lift is England's steepest funicular railway, carrying passengers from the Stade (the fishing quarter in Hastings' historic Old Town) to the top of the East Hill, at the start of Hasting Country Park.

It runs through a 120 ft deep cutting and is 265 ft long. The incline is 1 in 1.28.

"It is not often you get the fun of commemorating the re-opening of something so historical as this and I look forward to travelling on it myself one day!"

Isobel Fraser Underhill, cover designer

This beautiful cover shows this unusual railway against the glory of the cliffs, and marks the lift's Grand Re-Opening in March 2010.

What Makes This Cover So Special?
  • Postmarked on the day of the reopening at Hastings
  • After this date, no more can be made, making it a true limited edition. Of course, this is true of all our covers.

  • Carried onboard and bears a "carried cachet".
  • Each cover was carried on the East Hill Lift on 27th March 2010, the day of the official re-opening - and received a "cachet" (official rubber stamp) to certify this.

  • Delightful historic painting of East Hill Lift
  • This came from a very old postcard dating back to the golden age of the East Hill Lift, shortly after it was built. The illustration was provided thanks to Hastings Borough Council.

  • Wording is in gold blocking
  • As always, our picture simply can't do justice to the gold blocking. It looks much better in real life!

What is a "cachet"?

A cachet is a specially designed rubber stamp. It is NOT a postmark. Postmarks can only be applied by official Post Offices where as anyone can design a cachet and put it on their cover. A cachet makes a cover unique and tells its story. In the case of railway covers, cachets are applied to certify that a cover has been carried on a certain train, line or during a special event.
Read more about cachets here.

East Hill Lift - A History

The Lift was opened in August 1902 with wooden cards and was originally worked by the "water balance" method. This method of operation continued until 1973, when the Lift was closed for modernisation and an electric motor and modern fibreglass cars were added.

The Lift was closed again in June 2007 for further improvement and re-opened in March 2010 following a £350,000 investment programme undertaken by Hastings Borough Council. This saw the return of brand new wooden cars, very similar to the original 1902 design. These are fully accessible however and include space for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Visitors to Hastings can once again enjoy spectaculr views across the Old Town from the top of the East Hill, without having to climb nearly 200 steps!
