This cover celebrates twenty years of the Class 91 locomotives. The fleet of 140mph, 6300hp electric locomotives were ordered specifically for the East Coast Main Line modernisation and electrification programme of the late 1980s and with the Mark IV coaches, they form the ‘Intercity 225’ trainsets. They are now owned by HSBC Rail.
Our striking cover features artwork from the great Terence Cuneo and is postmarked at Kings Cross. Each cover was carried on a Class 91 on the Anniversary Day.

Class 91s - A History
The Class 91s began passenger service on the 3rd of March 1989 when 91001 worked a service from Kings Cross to Peterborough. On the 11th of March they began working King's Cross to Leeds trains and it was on the 10.00 Leeds to Kings Cross service that the guard announced, whilst descending Stoke Bank, that this was the location where mallard reached its world record speed of 126mph going down, but this morning the Class 91 had gone up the bank at 140mph.
Locomotive 91010 still holds the British locomotive speed record of 162mph, set on September 17th 1989, just south of Little Bytham on a test run down Stoke Bank.
