A Moment in Railway History Begins
It was the first time since 1960 that a fire had been lit in a new steam locomotive built for the UK network. This is the first A1 to be seen in action for 40 years.
This cover marks Tornado's first movements.
A1 Pacific No 60163 Tornado is the first completely new locomotive. It is built from an original design but with up-to-the-minute technology.
John Wigston is one of the world's leading railway artists. We're proud to have worked a lot with John on cover projects and after huge collector interest, he recently gave us an exclusive interview.
This cover is part of our stunning Tornado cover series, designed by Isobel Fraser Underhill using artwork by famous railway artist, John Wigston.
It features a special £1 carriage labels, a stamp and label from our A1 Pacifics Stamp Sheet and a carried cachet to certify that your cover was indeed onboard when Tornado moved for the first time.
Genuinely Carried on the Day
We arranged with Tornado's creators, A1 Steam to carry these covers onboard when Tornado first turned her wheels. Each has a carried cachet to certify this.
If you're not sure what a "cachet" is, click here to open our jargon buster and all will be explained!
It pays to book Buckingham Railway covers pre-release because prices rise after issue and they often sell out.
This cover was automatically reserved for members of our Railway Cover Club.

More About Tornado
A1 Pacific No 60163 Tornado is a completely new locomotive. She is not a reproduction or a preserved engine. The locomotive has been built from an original design but with up-to-the-minute technology. That makes it a landmark in railway history.
It has also been:
- Over 50 years since we've had a new standard gauge express passenger steam locomotive.
- Over 40 years since an A1 has been seen in action
- 50 years since a steam loco was last built in Darlington
The last of the renowned Peppercorn class A1 steam locomotives before Tornado emerged Phoenix-like from the ashes, was scrapped in 1966.
