Without George Stephenson, Britain would never have led the world in railway history. Stephenson was the man behind the world's first ever public railway: Stockton and Darlington Railway. He also invented the most famous early railway locomotive, the Rocket.

Tribute to a Pioneer

Stephenson died on 12 August 1848 in Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

160 years on, salute this British genius with a stunning railway cover. It is number 42 in our official Buckingham Railway Series.

The cover is postmarked at Chesterfield, Derbyshire where Stephenson passed away, on the exact anniversary of his death.

The Legendary Rocket

Thousands came to watch the now-legendary competition at Rainhill in 1829. The aim was to talent spot the best locomotive for carrying heavy loads over long distances. The competition became known as the 'Rainhill Trials' and at the time was equivalent to man's first trip to the moon, it was reported on newspaper front pages all around the world.

And the winner? Stephenson's Rocket didn't just win. She wiped the floor with the competition, achieving a record speed of 36 miles per hour. In 1829, that was faster than the Mexican two-step.
