Triple world champion, Sir Jack Brabham was the first driver in history to be knighted for services to motor sport. In his 15 year career, he won 14 Formula One titles and was placed runner up 10 times.
But in 1966, everyone had written him off. Why? He was turning 40!
"Over the hill", they said, "too old". "He’ll never make it".
The press – and some of the motorsport world – laughed at him.
"Geriatric Jack" took it with good humour. The first race after his 40th birthday, he hobbled onto the starting grid, wearing a long false beard and learning on jack handle as a walking stick. Then, flinging the props aside, he jumped into his car and won the race!
Sir Jack ended that year not only as Formula One World Constructors Champion but also as the first and only driver in Formula One history to win a world championship in a self-built car. Now there’s a way to celebrate your 40th birthday!
