British Railways Standard Class 9F number 92220 Evening Star was the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways and the last mainline steam locomotive built in the UK until the completion of 60163 Tornado in 2008.

She was the only British main line steam locomotive ear-marked for preservation from the date of construction! Build in 1960 at Swindon Railway Works, Evening Star was the 999th locomotive of the whole British Railways Standard range.

STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway

We are proud to have created this cover in association with STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway. The museum is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works.

The Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway - 'God’s Wonderful Railway' - a railway network that, through the pioneering vision and genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was regarded as the most advanced in the world.

The medal edition of this cover was automatically reserved for anyone in our coin cover clubs (signed or unsigned, depending on your personal preference) and the railway edition of this cover was automatically reserved for members of our railway cover club. In all cases, club members get the lowest possible prices (e.g. the medal edition cover was £14.95 at new issue to club members).
