Special Signed Editions

A limited number of these covers were genuinely signed by Glenda Jackson to help us raise money for ChildLine. Not only that but she also allowed us to use her image on the cover. Although now displaying her political prowess as an MP for Hampstead, in her former career she graced our screens as a two-time Academy Award winning actress, who notably portrayed Elizabeth I in BBC's 1971 blockbuster serial Elizabeth R. Her portrayal is considere unparalled in accuracy by Elizabethan scholars, and she won two Emmy Awards for her work in the series. Who better to sign our fantastic covers!

Special postmarks

Our main cover has been postmarked in Hatfield, which is the childhood home of Elizabeth I. However, we also produced just 75 covers with an alternative Hatfield postmark showing a profile of the Virgin Queen. Sadly 11 of these were damaged during postmarking, so in reality even fewer are available.

What is a first day cover?

At its most basic level, a first day cover (FDC) is an envelope bearing stamps postmarked on the first day that the stamps were issued. A cover originates from the practice of covering a letter in a separate sheet, so that it remained protected and safe from prying eyes. On the day the penny black was first issued, 1 May 1840, so emerged the very first FDC. Click here to find out more about first day covers
