Special Signed Edition

A small number of covers have been personally signed by Dame Judi Dench! As well as being a national treasure in her own right, Judi notably portrayed Queen Victoria in the 1997 film "Mrs. Brown". Her signature makes this cover a truly charming collector's item.

Also known as "the grandmother of Europe", Queen Victoria was the longest reigning female monarch in history. This cover has been double postmarked, once in Windsor and a second time in Osborne on the Isle of Wight, both favourite locations of "Mrs. Brown", as she was affectionately known. In addition to being one of the most influential monarch in modern European history, one might say she was also part of creating what you are now looking at; it was after all her face that appeared on the very first postal stamps! What is a first day cover?

At its most basic level, a first day cover (FDC) is an envelope bearing stamps postmarked on the first day that the stamps were issued. A cover originates from the practice of covering a letter in a separate sheet, so that it remained protected and safe from prying eyes. On the day the penny black was first issued, 1 May 1840, so emerged the very first FDC. Click here to find out more about first day covers
