What are covers?
Specialist collectors refer to an envelope as a
“cover”. It
dates back to the days when messages were wrapped in a cover of silk or
oiled cloth to keep them safe. Collecting covers is a passion for many
and an investment for some.
Railway themed covers have been popular since the 1970s. Nearly every
special train will have had
its own cover at some point. These can be very collectable. Some are
now hard to find. Collecting railway covers should be a fun hobby but
can sometimes prove a small investment
as well.
The Buckingham Railway Series
Buckingham Covers launched an official railway series in 2003 with a
cover officially produced for Hornby. It was a sell out and is now
impossible to find anywhere! At the time, it cost just £7.95
to buy but only 4 years on
and you'd be looking to spend over £40 to get one in your
collection (if you can find one! We
have a waiting list of eager collectors but we just can't find any to
buy).
That's why it pays to buy Buckingham Railway covers as soon as they are
issued. If you wait, the
chances are they will sell out and you'll end up paying more in the
future.
The most popular Buckingham Railway Covers
HORNBY: Our first railway cover
was officially produced for Hornby. It
featured a Terence Cuneo rail stamp from 1985 a Hornby stamp from 2003
AND an
exclusive Hornby Rail Letter stamp.
But it was the postmarks that made
it very more special. The cover was postmarked at Margate (home of
Hornby)AND postmarked again on the last day of 3 Travelling Post
Offices: South Wales, South East and East Anglian.
Not suprisingly, the
cover was a sell-out.
It was a limited edition. Each cover was sold privately and so they are
all treasured in individual collections.
That's why you hardly ever see any for sale, even though we have a
waiting list of collectors desperate to get
their hands on one!
If you have one of these covers to sell, we are currently offering £20.
HOGWARTS EXPRESS:
No
prizes for guessing our Hogwarts Express cover also joins the
Buckingham Railway Covers hall of fame! Anything featuring Harry Potter
has a huge following with collectors and fans. This was no exception.
On 1st August 2005, we carried a limited number onboard the actual
Hogwarts Express used in the films (5972 Olton Hall). Carried covers
had an unique cachet.
These sold out faster than a firebolt! If you have one for sale, we are
currently offering £15 per carried cover.
MUMBLES:
On 25th March 1807, a
railroad carriage converted to carry people was conveyed by horse along
Swansea Bay, travelling between "the dunes" at Swansea and destined for
Mumbles, an oyster harvesting and fishing village. The people who
undertook this journey were unknowing pioneers - the first railway
passengers in world history.
We marked the 200th anniversary of the Mumbles Railway with a superb
cover, the 21st in our official Railway series. It sold out within
days. If you have one to sell, we are currently offering
£8.95 for it.
