Who is Cath Buckingham?

...meet our Director of Design

Cath Buckingham is one of the world’s leading cover designers. She is the winner of 8 Royal Mail awards for cover design and 3 Fasson Awards for design and printing.

Cath has had a strong influence internationally on both covers and collecting. As Director of Design at Benham (the UK’s largest cover producer), she introduced revolutionary designs that were imitated throughout the cover world. Her creativity has had free rein at Buckingham Covers, where she has enjoyed experimenting with design and layout to create works of art.

Cath comes from an artistic family as the daughter of wood engraver, R.G.Broadhurst but initially was more interested in developing language skills. Like Tony, Cath began her career as a teacher. It took some persuasion before she appreciated the delights of covers (and cricket)! Once convinced, Cath joined Tony to found and run Benham (A Buckingham) Ltd. She was the joint driving force behind a company that became the UK’s number one cover producer.

During her time at Benham, Cath built a design team of 5, training each member of staff personally. Now at Buckingham Covers, she is training 2 new designers of promise. When Cath began, everything was done with Letraset, a scalpel and a very steady hand. These days, there is the best technology available and all our covers are designed using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Either way, creating a perfect postmark is a real skill.

Outside work, Cath enjoys horse-riding, going to the gym and making delicious cakes (the first two counteract the last!). She has two noisy cats, sings in a choir and loves spending time with her family (Tony, Ellie and Tom). Cath really appreciates all the lovely comments and letters she receives from collectors. She explains it is always a bit scary offering up your own work to the public so it means a great deal to have such a strong support base. Thanks to everyone!
